Deja Brew Mosaic

You start with a recipe. One of a hundred or so types of beers. See the beer tree for examples. Gather the ingredients per the recipe. Put them in the kettle. Follow the instructions. If you have any questions, check with one of the brew masters.

2 or 3 weeks later you return to Deja Brew to bottle your results. You wash the bottles. Fill the bottles. Fill the cases.

The next step is easy.

Take the beer home.

Chill and enjoy.

Community-Building: Better Ways of Being Together
This half-day workshop, facilitated by Phillip and Andrea Spencer-Linzie, is based on the "community building" process developed by M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled. Participants practice ways of being together that create the possibility for authentic connection.

For the morning session on Day 1 of GEL2007 in New York City I selected and lucked out with a juggling lessons with the Flying Karamazov Brothers. They don't fly, they aren't brothers, but they do juggle, and juggle very well.

I won't make their "B" team anytime soon. I have a lot of practicing to do to keep the third ball in the air regularly but I do have a good idea of what I need to do and some key things to focus on to get there.

Street vendors

I love the street vendors in NYC. Took my morning run from the hotel up and through part of Central Park stopping at a cart on the corner of the street near the hotel.

Small black coffee, 1 pint bottle Poland Spring water, one seseme bagel (plain).

$2.25.

Yes, that's right. Each single item can cost much more elsewhere.

Early bird

Here in NYC for the Good Experience Live conference today and Friday. The view from the hotel room shows only one early bird in the building across the way.

Do you like to get an early start?

Or are you a late riser?

Does it matter to how successful you can be?

What do you think?

Reebok campaign #2

For Reebok to drape the hall at Boston's South Station with this kind of message, I find demeaning. Especially to all the runners who just completed the Boston Marathon on Monday April 16th.

If you don't push yourself to a challenge, you will not know what you can do.

Once you have pushed yourself to a challenge, then the completion (success or failure) should be acknowledged as an accomplishment.

What do you think?

The militia celebrate the start and finish of each Revolution soccer game by firing a round of blanks.

During the game they celebrate each Revolution goal.

Saturday, at the home opening game versus Toronto FC, the Revs lit up the night with four goals. The fourth also marked the 500th in the team's history.

Fortunately, the defense was tight and they shut out Toronto 4-0.

Way to go Revs!

This is the edited version of Phil's keynote to the HDI New England event in Marlboro on 3/23/07. The talk itself is left intact. What was edited out was the intro and the question and answer period after he finished.

Time: 27 minutes, 3 seconds

Light blogging alert

Franklin is facing a budget override and I anticipate that I will be busy helping to get the vote turned out for May 22.

It really is a mayday call to Franklin. The Town Council decision to put forward a $2.7 Million Proposition 2 ½ override still leaves all departments short of their budget requests and will require cuts to the services provided for in the current fiscal year.

Exactly what that means to Franklin is still being sorted out. Amongst the items discussed IF the override passes would still be approx 25-30 school personnel cuts, Fire, Police, DPW cuts, library shut. Stay tuned for the details.

IF the override fails, the picture gets worse real quick!

PS - check the scrolling headlines for Steve's 2 Cents to keep up with the override.

Envy

From the Business section of the Boston Sunday Globe comes this excerpt:

Envy is a powerful force in the human psyche -- and a tool to be exploited in marketing.

While marketers have long been aware that consumers clamor for products endorsed by celebrities or people with whom they identify, new research suggests businesses can stoke the enthusiasm of some potential customers by giving preferential treatment to others.

The promise and perils of this slight-the-customer approach are explored in a recent Journal of Marketing Research article titled "How to Attract Customers by Giving Them the Short End of the Stick."

It draws on a half dozen experiments conducted at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, where student volunteers from the master of business administration program were presented with a range of products and scenarios. The authors conclude that, under the right circumstances, "consumers judge the same offer to be more attractive when a seller offers a better price or more benefits to another group than when the seller treats everyone equally."

The article is based on the dissertation of Alison K.C. Lo , a recent doctoral graduate of Fuqua. She cites a number of examples of how the theory has played out in the real business world.

I recognize this phenomenon but I am not comfortable with it. Groucho's comment resonates well with me.

Would you do this to your customers?

Easter Welcome

The story has it that the pineapple was a "welcome" symbol for the clipper ship captains when they returned home from a voyage to their New England home port; Boston, Salem, Newport, etc. The captain would stick a pineapple on the front stair post and thereby neighbors and friends would know the captain was home.

It is cool today in New England, about 35 F so it won't be too inviting to sit outside and have a conversation.

If you do visit, make yourself comfortable amongst the archives.

Music to run

There is a great event coming up this Saturday at Hopkinton High School. The Metrowest Symphony Orchestra will be conducting a special concert to help kick off "Marathon Week".

Regular readers may recall that Carolyn had the opportunity to play for this wonderful group while she was a student at Franklin High. She is still pictured in the group photo on the Metrowest website.

I wrote about the symphony previously here and here.

More about the concert is available here or directly at the Metrowest website.

If you go, I am sure it will be enjoyable.

This is a hidden gem for the Metrowest area. If you live in Franklin, Milford, Medway, Hopkinton, Westboro, Millis, Southboro, Marlboro or any of the other neighboring towns, you should look into attending a concert. This is great classical music at a very reasonable price.

CoComment removed due to problem

You may have noticed some long delays loading the page today. I am not sure when it started but was at least occurring during the time I was blogging this Tuesday evening. Near as I could tell, the page load slowness was due to CoComment having some problems. Their site was not reachable. Their blog was not accessible. So for the time being the widget was removed.

We'll see what CoComment says about this when they get back online and determine how to proceed.

Updated:
Hi,

Yes, some people were not able to access our service or did get very slow response.
We are still investigating what happened and will communicate as soon as we have more details.
This was not a total outage: the service was still accessible and many users didn't noticed any issues with it.

Part of the team is shown here as they lined up during the introductions during the recent "Meet the Revs" event. Shalrie Joseph, white shirt, baseball cap on backwards in the center of the photo is one of the key players for the Revs.

He plays the middle of the middle five in their 3-5-2 formation. He is the defensive general, the playmaker. As he goes, so goes the team. Yet he is not alone, the other ten on the field need to be in synch with him. They need to understand each other, which way to pass, when not to.

What about your line up?

Who is your playmaker?

Who is your 'go to' person when the going gets tough?

StopCyberBully Update

It is heartening to read that Kathy Sierra and Chris Locke have posted a joint statement about the major incident that prompted my endorsement of Andy Carvin's stopcyberbullying posting last week.

You can read their joint statement here.

Sounds like there may be more civil conversations about this as the story continues to play out.
