How about the milk smiley?

Did you see the news about the milk marketing board now attempting to create a milk smiley with an emoticon?

The only previous "branded" emoticon was one for Princess Leia (which is hardly used).

Do you think this one will have staying power?

Will it change your smiley face from :-) to :-{) ?

New York Times freebie today

NYTimes_001
Originally uploaded by shersteve.
Yes, the Times is indeed hard up. So much so they have elected to drop not just one but two copies of their Sunday paper, for free, in the driveways and doorsteps of Franklin today (well at least we got two copies).

Odd though that they would pick this particular edition to do so when the paper contains not only the normal Sunday Magazine section but this Women's Fashion section as well. Oh, maybe due to the fashion and spring thoughts it is not SO surprising.

What I am intrigued about though is the prominent text marking this section as "Adult Content".

I would have been attracted to the section with the picture of Robin anyway but what is in here that is "Adult Content"?

Why leave it in the driveway for the kids to bring in and ramble through?

Note: a quick peruse of the photos did not reveal anything unusual... the same old fashion shots. Must be something in the article text so I may give it more of a read later. If I have time.

Theo Jansen - strandbeests

Found this BMW ad featuring Theo Jansen and his strandbeests. An awesome sight.

You might recognize him and his work. He was a speaker at the GEL 2005 and I wrote about him here.

I like the line Theo mentions at the end of the ad clip:
"The wall between art and engineering exist only in our minds."

Old bell tower still tolls

Sprawling mill complex.

Probably dates from early 1900's.

Architecturally this used to be a bell tower. The bells tolled for the work shifts, beginning and end, with workers coming and going.

Now a satellite dish rests atop to connect this plant with others around the world.

The workers are still driven by something on high.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Another kitchen cabinet photo to share. This will be a placeholder and teaser for a longer post on the Pawtucket RedSox who play at McCoy Stadium. I grew up on Division Street about a mile from the stadium.

Many stories to tell about the days playing in and around Pawtucket.

Some are stirring in the pot. Ready, they're not.

Just yet anyway.

So you'll need to settle for Mickey dancing for the moment and imagining your own story....

Hey, who are those guys?

Since this is part of my content network, and the point of blogging is to create a conversation, why not show what it looks like to talk to yourself on a cold Franklin morning?

Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Truth in advertising

I have been noticing that the Tom Peters blog is less Tom's postings and more others chiming in. Not that Tom doesn't p0st, he does. In bursts like he usually does (and does well).

A tally of his front page as this day ends shows he was out posted 9-3. He held his own on the second page though; 15-7. The total over the two pages: 18-16 with Tom eking out the edge.

Is this sample statistical? I think it is enough to make the point. How many people go to the second page of a blog? Certainly not the regular visitors. Where they arrive (assuming it is the first page) is where they'll stay.

I don't begrudge Tom any benefits of what he has earned. I own almost all his books so I have contributed to his success (in a small way) and benefited from his insights.

I just think that maybe the time has come to call the blog, the Tom Peters Company Blog. Mind you, he does keep great company. But the blog is no longer just Tom Peters.

Just thinking...

What do you think?

Beckham fever

In case you missed it, David Beckham (yes, he is the one referenced in the movie "Bend it like Beckham") has signed a contract with the LA Galaxy and is coming to the USA to play soccer this summer.

The MLS schedule was just announced and Becks will be making an appearance at Gillette Stadium to play our NE Revolution on August 12th.

Apparently, the Revolution ticket office is deciding to NOT make single game tickets available to the public, period. Any ticket for this game must be part of a group purchase or part of a package.

I know why they are doing this.
They have a chance to sell more tickets to other games.
But if they really wanted to sell tickets, they would reduce the hurdles required to get to the game.

For that soccer fan who has stayed on the sidelines thus far, make it easy for them to get to the game. You assume that once there, they'll will like what they see and come back for more.

If you create this hurdle of having to buy tickets to other games to get to this ONE, only those who can afford the tickets will come and you will have missed an opportunity to really maximize the population for the game.

Disclosure: I do have two season tickets and based upon the poor experience buying them last season (our first as season ticket holders), I almost did not return to the fold this season. That is another story for another time.

Read, Write, Share

It used to be "readin, 'ritin, and 'rithmetic". That was the old school way. Math is still important but I think sharing and collaboration are more so.

The Love Affair with Books has moved from Rosa Say's Talking Story to the Joyful Jubilant Learning blog.

I have reserved my spot in this line up. I will expand upon the teaser quotes I have been leaving around to do a full review of This is Your Brain on Music, The Science of Human Obsession by Daniel Levitin

If you would like a spot, feel free to click over and sign up.

Leadership or Impedership?

Thinking back to Peters' two-step model, it's clear that it's point number two that slowly trips most managers. A large percentage of the time, the team accomplishes less than it might have in the absence of management -- that isn't "leadership," rather, its opposite. We need a new word for that, and because such management impedes progress, that word logically would be "impedership."

Don't Get Cosi - South Station, Boston

Cosi opened in the South Station Food court about two weeks ago. It has been so busy I have avoided it. I figured, wait until the newness crowd wears away a little and then try it. But one day this week, I got there just before noon and as the line was the shortest amongst those in the court so I decided to give it a try.

The sandwich was reasonably priced for a deli. Nice tasting, fresh bread. Not bad. So I decided to try it again today. Got there just at noon, again the line was not long but grew quickly while I waited. Now I think I understand some of the problem. The organization of the sandwich delivery process is a mess.

There are several registers in front with no clear demarcation via sign above or lines on the floor as to where to stand to get in line for which register. Several seconds lost here trying to figure out who's next. Meanwhile the register person is waiting. Not very efficient.

Place your order, pay at the register and they give you the bag. It has the napkin and utensil (if required) and either carrots or chips (whichever you choose with your sandwich). They also give you the receipt with your order#. But no sandwich. You'd think think the order# would be the biggest boldest thing on the slip but it is actually the same size as the change amount that the register person has already given to give you (and by the way, was prompted by the register to provide that amount). Opportunity here.

Then you go around the side where you can wait with the others for the lottery (or bingo caller) to hear your number, claim your sandwich, put it into your own bag, and go off on your way. Now with all due respect to my fellow citizens, some cannot accomplish this task easily. This should be easily recognized. Some folks, elderly and others, are not going to be able to juggle their cane (or other packages) and use two hands to put the sandwich into the bag.

Cosi makes an attempt to help this by positioning someone outside the counter to play match maker. Calling the numbers and assisting with placement of the sandwich in the bag. Is this really the most effective use of resources? I think not.

Bottom line, I would have second thoughts about going to Cosi again. The sandwich is good but it is not that good to put up with the hassle of getting it in a timely fashion during the lunch period. There must be a better way to organize that delivery process. The process may work in a slow period but clearly does not work well in rush hour.

PS - The bottom of the receipt offers $2 off the next meal if your fill out the survey at the link provided. Too many questions, too much information requested, some of it clearly inappropriate for this particular restaurant location. It is in a food court, there is no one to greet you and seat you like a normal sit down place. Too much work for too little gain, especially considering I probably won't be back there anytime soon.
